SPEED CAMS: Polk County Mobile Units Start Monday

Metro drivers will find more company on the roads Monday, in the form of two automated traffic cameras.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says it will start using its mobile speed cameras on Monday.

The cameras are mounted in sheriff SUV’s similar to the one used by the city of Des Moines but can still clock speeders while the vehicle is being operated.

For the first 30-days the cameras will only issue warnings. After that, fines will start at $65 for drivers going 11 miles or more over the speed limit.

The cameras will focus on areas outside of city limits that see a lot of speeders, accidents and have dangerous intersections.
